Manual Therapy
at Backsmith Montana Chiropractic.
Manual therapy at Backsmith Montana Chiropractic focuses on addressing muscular discomfort, soft tissue restrictions, and movement-related pain through targeted, hands-on treatment.
Whether you're dealing with persistent neck and shoulder tension, an achy low back, or muscles that just don't seem to settle down, treatment is tailored to your symptoms, goals, and preferences.
What Is Manual Therapy?
Manual therapy refers to hands-on treatment techniques used to address pain, muscle tension, and limitations in movement.
At Backsmith, manual therapy is an important part of our approach to musculoskeletal care. Treatment may involve sustained pressure, soft tissue mobilization, stretching, or other techniques selected according to your individual needs.
Rather than following a predetermined routine, we focus on the areas contributing to your discomfort and adjust treatment based on how you respond.
The goal isn't simply to make a muscle feel better for a few minutes. It's to help you move more comfortably and get back to the activities that matter to you.
Manual Therapy Techniques at Backsmith
Myofascial Release
Sustained, hands-on pressure and movement directed toward sensitive or restricted soft tissues.
Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization
The use of specialized tools to apply controlled pressure and movement to muscles and other soft tissues. Sometimes called scraping.
Trigger Point Therapy
Focused pressure applied to tender areas of muscle that may contribute to localized or referred discomfort.
Cupping Therapy
A technique using suction to lift and gently mobilize soft tissues, sometimes leaving temporary circular marks.
When Might Manual Therapy Be Helpful?
Headaches
For some people, headaches come with a familiar combination of neck stiffness, shoulder tension, or tenderness around the base of the skull. When these musculoskeletal factors appear to be contributing to your symptoms, hands-on treatment may help reduce discomfort and improve neck movement. We look at the whole picture rather than assuming every headache is caused by tight muscles.
Active Bodies & Physically Demanding Work
Between workouts, outdoor adventures, repetitive movements, and physically demanding jobs, your muscles can have a lot asked of them. Manual therapy may help manage the aches and discomfort that come with those demands, making it easier to stay active, tolerate physical activity, and keep doing the things you enjoy.
Neck & Upper Back Tension
Whether you're spending hours at a desk, looking down at your phone, or carrying tension through a demanding workday, discomfort in the neck, shoulders, and upper back can become exhausting. Hands-on treatment can help address tender, overworked muscles and make everyday movements like turning your head, reaching overhead, or sitting comfortably feel easier.
Persistent Aches & Tender Muscles
You know that spot you keep pressing on because it feels good for about five seconds before the discomfort comes right back? Sometimes muscles remain sensitive or uncomfortable despite stretching, rest, or changing positions. Manual therapy uses targeted hands-on techniques to address those areas, decrease sensitivity, and help you move more comfortably.
Low Back & Hip Stiffness
Getting out of the car, bending to pick something up, or standing after a long day shouldn't feel like a production. When muscular discomfort or stiffness is contributing to difficulty moving, manual therapy can help ease symptoms and improve comfort with daily activities. Treatment focuses on the areas that are bothering you, not a one-size-fits-all routine.
Stress Relief & Relaxation
Sometimes you don't have an injury or a specific problem to fix — you just need a little time to unwind. Stress and the demands of everyday life can leave you feeling tense, achy, and worn down. Manual therapy offers an opportunity to slow down, ease built-up tension, and enjoy dedicated hands-on care. Feeling better doesn't always have to start with something being wrong.
What to Expect During Manual Therapy
Manual therapy appointments at Backsmith are 30 minutes, allowing dedicated time to address the areas that are bothering you rather than rushing through treatment.
Your visit may begin with heat to help you relax and settle in. Depending on the areas being treated, you may be asked to change into a gown to allow comfortable access to the muscles and surrounding tissues.
Soft music and low lighting are available to create a more relaxing environment while treatment is tailored to your symptoms, preferences, and comfort level.
The extended visit allows us to spend more time working on areas of muscular discomfort and tension before incorporating chiropractic adjustments when appropriate.
The goal is simple: more time for hands-on care, less rushing, and treatment that meets you where you are.
Manual Therapy FAQs
-
Manual therapy and massage share some hands-on techniques, but manual therapy at Backsmith is provided within a musculoskeletal treatment plan. Rather than following a full-body relaxation routine, treatment focuses on specific areas of discomfort, movement limitations, and your individual goals.
-
Some techniques may produce temporary tenderness, particularly when working with sensitive muscles. However, treatment should remain within your comfort level. More pressure isn't always better, and we encourage communication throughout your visit so the approach can be adjusted.
-
Manual therapy is offered exclusively as an add-on to chiropractic care and is not available as a standalone service. It comes at an additional cost to your standard chiropractic visit.
The extended 30-minute appointment allows more dedicated time for hands-on treatment before incorporating chiropractic adjustments when appropriate. This is a great option for patients who want additional attention to muscular discomfort, tension, or specific problem areas.
-
Ideally, you'll leave feeling relaxed, refreshed, and a little more comfortable in your body. Manual therapy offers an opportunity to slow down, let go of some built-up tension, and enjoy dedicated hands-on care. You may notice easier movement, less discomfort, or simply feel like you've had a much-needed moment to unwind.
-
Your first appointment is primarily dedicated to getting to know you, discussing your health history, and completing a thorough examination. Depending on how much time remains, we love to incorporate as much hands-on soft tissue work as possible!
For patients wanting additional hands-on care, our dedicated 15-minute manual therapy add-on can be included in future chiropractic visits.
